St. Luke's Hospital has been providing quality health services to San Franciscans and Northern Peninsula residents for more than 130 years. Each year, more than 1,200 babies are born at St. Luke's. Our obstetricians, neonatologists and pediatricians play a pivotal role in getting these children off to a healthy start.

Our staff of board-certified pediatricians and family nurse practitioners provide ready information and medical services, including well baby care, immunizations and school health examinations. Following is an overview of our neonatal and pediatric services.

Specialty Services for Newborns

Though most mothers and children experience no complications during the birthing process, St. Luke's is equipped to rapidly respond to any high-risk delivery. Our Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse and Pediatric Hospitalist attend all high-risk deliveries and, along with our neonatologists, care for and stabilize premature babies in St. Luke's Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). If necessary, transport to more extensive perinatology and/or neonatology services at California Pacific Medical Center is immediately available.

Pediatric Care for Children

St. Luke's Pediatric Unit enables sick children to receive needed care close to home. We have six dedicated, private pediatric rooms in which a parent is encouraged to stay during the child's hospitalization. Our pediatric hospitalists deliver attentive, child-centered care in our Emergency Department and Pediatrics Unit. They are available 24 hours a day to respond to any emergencies and attend any births that require their assistance. We are pleased to offer a pediatric specialist at all times of the day, and families with a child needing urgent attention appreciate this service as well.

Support for pediatric patients is also provided through our Asthma Education Program , Child Development and Rehabilitation Program and our Literacy Reading Program, which provides free books to children of all ages. Outreach staff can also help families enroll in the Healthy Families, Healthy Kids and Child Health and Disability Prevention programs.
