Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa has a long history in Sonoma County, dating back to 1866 when the first hospital was opened. In 1996, the Medical Center became an affiliate of Sutter Health.

A community based, not-for-profit health care provider, Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa believes that until they reach full-fledged adulthood at 21, children need a special kind of health care. They are not "miniature adults," but rather, complex and distinctive people in their own right, with unique physical and emotional needs at every stage of development. At Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa, we address the special care requirements of children by maintaining the region's most extensive and expertly staffed obstetric, neonatal, and pediatric services.

Requests for tours and further discussion of the facilities and services are welcome. For more information, call (707) 576-4347.

Specialty Services for Newborns

  • "Community" level (as designated by California Children's Services) neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) features the highest level neonatal nursing care in the North Bay. This level provides a full range of medical care for severely ill and/or premature infants. Babies who are born up to three months early or those requiring long-term support from a breathing machine can be expertly cared for here
  • Neonatal Transport Service assures safe transport to or from the hospital. While in transport, severely compromised infants receive care from a team that includes a neonatologist or pediatrician; nurse; respiratory care specialist; paramedic; and a pilot (for helicopter flights) or EMT ambulance driver. We are able to comply with the national standards of a 30 to 60-minute response time in activating the transport team to transport neonates 27 weeks of gestation and over, and for neonates requiring long-term ventilation or specialized medical intervention

Pediatric Care for Children

  • Sonoma County's only designated Pediatric Unit. It is open to children age 13 and under for acute inpatient care and for outpatient procedures such as IV therapy and minor surgery
  • The Child Life Program is designed to alleviate any concerns children and their families may have regarding their child's hospitalization and necessary medical procedures. It is the only such program in Sonoma County. Physicians who recognize a family's apprehension about a child's upcoming hospital stay can refer the family to this program
